  • The Japan West Kansai Pass allows unlimited travel on all JR Kansai Railway Co. trains such as Tokaido, Sanyo Main Line (Yamashina-Himeji), Osaka Loop Line, JR Tozai Line, Sakurajima Line, Katamachi Line, Nara Line, San-in Main Line (Kyoto-Hozukyo), Kansai Main Line (JR Namba-Kizu), Sakurai Line, Wakayama Line (Oji-Takada), Hanwa Line (Tennoji-Hineno), Kansai Airport Line and Osaka Higashi Line.

The validity period of a Japan Rail Kansai Pass is consecutive and start on the date the pass is actually first used.

How to make seat reservations?

  • Travellers cannot reserve a seat until they receive their Japan Rail Kansai Pass in Japan.
  • There is no extra charge for reserving a Pass
  • A non-reserved seat can be used simply by presenting their personal Kansai Pass.
  • To make a reservation, travellers must go to any Travel Service Center or a Reservation Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) green pictogram- at a JR station, or to the sales office of a JRassociated travel agency. There, showing their PASS, they obtain the reserved-seat ticket before the boarding.
  • The periods when seat reservations are particularly difficult to secure are as follows:
    • December 25th to January 5th: The New Year holiday period is the most popular travel time for Japanese people, for vacations and returns to hometowns areas.
    • April 29th to May 5th: Due to consecutive holidays in a comfortable travel season, there is a large-scale travel throughout Japan for leisure and recreation.
    • August 13th to 15th: Another time for traditional travel to hometown areas, called the Obon season.

How to get the JR Kansai Pass.

  • The traveller must exchange the Exchange Order for a Kansai Pass within 3 months from the date of issue.
  • The starting date must be specified the date that you want to start using the pass. It can be any date within one month from the date the pass is received.
  • Once the pass has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed.

Children’s rule

  • Free for children under 6 years old
  • Pass prices for children apply from age 6 to and including age 11 (half fare).

Eligible Party

  • This Pass can only be offered to non-Japanese passport holders who enter Japan as a “temporary visitor” with a permanent residence (for more than 6 months) outside of Japan.
  • It is very important to note that Japanese passport holder cannot use any of the regional passes; they can only use the standard Japan Rail Pass if they meet the overseas residence requirements.


  • There are no extra benefits.

Conditions of use

  • Only the person whose name is inscribed on the pass can use it.
  • The holder must carry a valid passport when using the pass. The travellers must exchange their Exchange Order for a Kansai Pass within three months from the date of issue. At that time, the traveller must specify the date that you want to start using the PASS. It can be any date within one month from the date the PASS is received.
  • The holder will be required to pay applicable fares incurred as a result of riding beyond the designated area for this pass.
  • No refund can be made even if there are no available reserved seats and the holder must use non-reserved seating.
  • Travellers cannot use an automatic ticket-reading gate with a Japan Rail Kansai Pass or a reserved-seat ticket. They have to show the PASS at a manned ticket gate. Once the PASS has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed. After commencing travel with the PASS beyond the valid period, it can be used until the day following its expiration date if no stops are made. If the trains you board on that day have accommodations requiring limited express or express charges, you must pay the applicable charges. During crowded periods you cannot be guaranteed a seat on a specific train.


  • No refund is payable on passes that have been validated, nor are refunds allowed on lost or stolen passes.
  • Applications for refund on unused passes must be submitted to the issuing office within 12 months of the date of issue and a 10% refund fee is payable.
  • For passes purchased overseas, refunds cannot be obtained in Japan. An Exchange Order that has not been submitted for a Japan Rail Pass can be returned to the office where it was purchased for a refund, within one year of the date of issue. In such cases, a handling fee and communication fee will be subtracted from the refund.
  • No refund can be made for any reason on or after the starting date of the PASS.
  • No refund on a JR Kansai Pass can be made in the event of train service delays or suspension, etc.
  • The validity of an Exchange Order during the period before it is submitted for a JR Kansai Rail Pass, however, shall follow the stipulations and regulations of the company that issued the Exchange Order.
